Honored to Receive the Key to the City of Lynchburg, Virginia
On November 11, 2023, I had the incredible honor of receiving the Key to the City of Lynchburg, Virginia—my beloved hometown. This recognition was completely unexpected, and I am deeply grateful to former Mayor Mary Dolan, the NAACP Lynchburg Branch leaders, and the City Council officials for this extraordinary gesture.
The occasion was the Freedom Fund Banquet, where I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address. The evening was filled with inspiration and memorable moments, but one that stands out is my conversation with Dr. Owen Cardwell, one of the first African-American students to integrate E.C. Glass High School. Listening to his story of courage and perseverance was a powerful reminder of the importance of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.
Congratulations to the honorees:
- Dr. Carl B. Hutcherson
- Elaine Duke
- Mary Payne
- Doris Waller
- Stan Webb
- One Community One Voice
- The incredible young leaders at Madison House
It was truly humbling to stand among such a phenomenal group of people who are making an impact every day. Thank you, Lynchburg, for pouring into me all these years. This city will always be home.
Now the big question: What doors will this key open? Time to find out!
